Getaway Weekend

April 13-15. A quick trip to Port Townsend was just what we needed to refresh our family. The weather was beautiful and we had so much fun playing at Fort Kinzie. I even figured out what the security access number was to get into the lighthouse. Oops! No one came to arrest me and the gate closed after a period of time so I walked away quickly. He hee! We ate yummy food at the Chinese restaurant, had a super awesome breakfast of crepes, cinnamon french toast, and got the privilege of staying the second night in a suite overlooking the water! We chose to take the ferry back to Seattle after making a quick stop in Poulsbo for some grub. Valerie found a Denmark shirt she had to have, and added a Denmark flag to her collection. Spur of the moment trips are so much fun!!

It all began in 1986! My parents volunteered to host a Japanese exchange student, through our local church! Norie flew to Washington State for a 3 week introduction to the our country. We hit it off the minute I met her. She came, with my parents, to pick me up from summer camp. Her little Japanese/English dictionary was the only way we could communicate. I guess in the end it didn't matter! She fell in love with the States, and I fell in love with Japan. I think that is what my parents had in mind, for us to understand a bit of culture that existed outside of our own. She quickly became my best friend. Through the years, she has visited twice (one of those times was when I was married in 1994), I have visited her in Japan in 1992, and then in New York in 2004. Norie loved the States so much that she ended up attending college here and currently resides in New York City! She has taught me so much respect for the Japanese culture. Monday, when we got back from our anniversary trip, found a note on the counter that read: Suzanne called. Play group. Tuesday at 830am. Who would schedule a playgroup so early? Doesn't anyone sleep in? Let the kids find their own breakfast, and stay under the covers till they beg for lunch? Well, you know heat here in the summers, ranging around the 100's, makes us southerners wake up early in the a.m. to do the things we enjoy. When noon rolls around, we hull up in our homes, doors tightly shut, curtains drawn, trying to escape the BIG BAD (the sun appropriately named, right Spike?)! I guess that was not in the cards for us today! We spent the early morning hours playing at the park with pretty much everyone from Journey! Unfortunately around 10 a.m. the heat found us and forced us to retreat to Suzanne's house for some relief!
