It's not about the $$'s that I am all excited about, it's about the principal. The principal being that we should teach, which I am focusing more on at home, the importance and value of items. Like your mother used to say when trying to get a child to eat their food, "there's starving children in Africa." Kids in Africa are starving, and a pencil to a child there is a precious gift. They use it until it is unable to write. One pencil can take a African child through a whole year of writing. Now I know that some kids in my daughter's school can't afford one, although I think we have no clue what poverty truly is (do you live in huts, sleep on the floors, and cook over a stone fireplace apart from a weekend of camping?) but to supply 100 pencils for a year is still considerabley rediculous. My hope this year is that the school system review what they have asked for, find creative means to supply those children with what they need, teach children the value of school supplies, review how lucky they are in their given circumstance, and be realistic about their requests. I am only basing this off of a Third World Country. I want our kids to value possessions and come to realize it's not a right it's a privileged.
Thursday night we took in all her school supplies minus 3 boxes of tissue, and 60 pencils. When and if she (the class because they are a shared item) goes through those and the class needs more throughout the year I will feel free to purchase more on a as needed basis. We met her teacher Mrs Hoover. She is a active Bee Keeper who seems very excited to start the new year. I am excited to help out more in the classroom this year and assist her with whatever she needs on my weeks off. I'm not a PTA type mom but am willing to help out when needed. Charlie is thrilled that her best friend is in class with her this year. Lexie and she have been friends for 3 years now. They are pretty amazing together. They compliment each other so well. Neither one is more dominant than the other so it is a very rare relationship that they both can play together and have fun without arguing. Mr Elery was there greeting kids with his easy going personality and his goofy grin. The kids absolutely love him and we do too because he can remember each child's name...and that makes them feel special!
